Forward Reconnaissance Specialist
My experience overseas, deployed forward early in my career, allowed me exposure to the Exchange and its Mission. This first-hand experience really helped me in my career choice with the Exchange because I knew I wanted to provide the same service to others in the armed forces.
I was a Cavalry Scout 8th Infantry Division, later the 1st Armored Division, in Baumholder, Germany. Late in the Cold War, we trained to meet the Russian invasion coming through the Fulda Gap. I wore the blue beret of a peacekeeper on a six-month deployment to Camp Able Sentry in Skopje, Macedonia, where we augmented forward operating posts with soldiers from Finland, Sweden and Norway for the United Nations.
During the first Gulf War, our unit deployed to Frankfurt, Germany, to guard the U.S. Embassy and ironically the post exchange. Later, I found myself back in the former Yugoslavia for a short time before I got out and became an AAFES associate in Baumholder. My experience overseas and being deployed forward early in my career allowed me exposure to the Exchange and its mission.
