Air Force Chief of Staff Visits Mobile Field Exchange Supporting Mission Near Border

DAVIS-MONTHAN AFB, Ariz. – As part of his visit to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Gen. David Goldfein, Chief of Staff of the Air Force, visited the Exchange’s mobile field exchange (MFE) last week.
The MFE, a 53-foot “Exchange on wheels” stocked with necessities, opened at Davis-Monthan on Nov. 8 at the request of Col. Julie Newlin, 355th Mission Support group commander, to support 3,500-4,000 troops serving in border support operations. Shampoo, socks, pillows, flashlights, batteries, snacks, drinks, sandwiches and other supplies are readily available for troops at the MFE.
Exchange Senior Enlisted Advisor Chief Master Sgt. Luis Reyes and Davis-Monthan Exchange General Manager Mikel Hunter briefed Goldfein on the MFE’s capabilities and the commitment to readiness the Department of Defense’s largest retailer provides.
“Thank you for doing this,” Goldfein said. “This is a really good thing.”
Commitment to readiness, resiliency
The MFE, which was open seven days a week, served Soldiers, Airmen, Marines and National Guard members who deployed to Davis-Monthan for the last four months. With border operations ramping down at Davis-Monthan, the MFE ceased operations on March 4.
Troops supporting the border operations live in a tent city, with the nearest brick-and-mortar Exchange two miles away. To get to that store, troops would need to walk or wait for a shuttle. The MFE meets their needs immediately.
“These MFEs underscore the Exchange’s commitment to readiness and resiliency,” Reyes said. “Since we can’t just come in and set up a brick-and-mortar facility for a short duration, the MFE is the perfect solution to ensure that the troops participating are mission ready and have the basics to see them through.”
