Exchange Recognized as Best for Vets Employer for Sixth Straight Year
The Exchange has been recognized by Military Times as a Best for Vets: Employer for the sixth year in a row.
“Veterans complement the Exchange mission,” said Leigh Roop, executive vice president and chief human resources officer. “We have worked hard to cultivate and support Veteran talent and are proud to have these efforts acknowledged by Military Times.”
The Department of Defense’s largest retailer was recognized as the second-best government or nonprofit organization for excellence in providing job opportunities for Veterans ahead of 17 other organizations, including including UT MD Anderson Cancer Center, PenFed Credit Union and the United States Postal Service.

This is the first year Military Times has ranked for-profit companies and government/nonprofit organizations (see here) on separate lists.
2019 Best for Vets employer rankings are based on the number of Veteran employees and new hires for fiscal year 2018 and on-boarding offerings like orientation, mentorship and training.
Military Times also considers military spouse policies regarding telework, schedule flexibility and ability to transfer to another branch as well as Reservist pay when determining its rankings.
Committed to hiring, training Vets
Veterans currently make up 11.8% of the Exchange’s workforce.
In 2018, the Exchange hired nearly 7,000 Veterans and military spouses worldwide, and reaffirmed its commitment to hiring 50,000 Veterans and military spouses by 2020.
Exchange Veteran recruiting efforts include the Veterans Retail Management Training program, job fairs, truck shows and other outreach events.
Since 2013, the Exchange has hired more than 39,000 Veterans and military spouses.
The Exchange’s connection to Veterans took on even greater importance when the Department of Defense concurred with extending a lifelong online military Exchange shopping benefit to all honorably discharged Veterans in 2017.

Having been retired for two years, I got bored and decided to seek some part-time employment. The exchange program is the perfect fit.
I may be too old to serve active, however not too old to serve the serving. It’s encouraging to observe and speak with current active and other retired service members and their families. Besides, the work environment is fantastic. Glad to read that AAFES does well in employing Vets and member spouses. Also a Soldier for Life.
