From the 2019 Express Seminar: Exchange Revs Up Army Veteran’s 50th Birthday with $19,000 Motorcycle
For retired Staff Sgt. Cheryl Davis, first time was the charm.
The Army Veteran entered her first Exchange contest earlier this year. Now, she is ready to head off into the sunset on her new motorcycle—she just needs to learn to ride it first.
“I couldn’t believe it was true,” said Davis, winner of the Exchange’s Jack Daniels Indian Motorcycle sweepstakes. “I still don’t know if it’s real yet.”
Davis, who entered to win on ShopMyExchange.com, got her first look at the prize, valued at $19,000, during the Exchange’s annual Express Seminar in Orlando on June 26. She received the motorcycle one day before her 50th birthday.
Chief Master Sgt. Luis Reyes, Exchange senior enlisted advisor, handed the retired Soldier the keys to her new ride and helped her celebrate.
“Real heroes shop with the Exchange, and real heroes win our sweepstakes,” Reyes said. “It is such a privilege to present this motorcycle to retired Staff Sgt. Davis, who spent 21 ½ years serving her county. She deserves this.”
Davis, who lives in Champions Gate, Fla., retired from the Army in 2014. She deployed to Iraq shortly after 9/11 and says she was grateful to the Exchange for providing comfort and a taste of home.
“The Exchange was there for me, especially right after 9/11 in Iraq,” Davis said. “We had nothing. Then, the Exchange got there and started putting up tents—I was so happy to see them.”
Nearly 11,000 Exchange shoppers—Soldiers, Airmen, retirees, family members and honorably discharged Veterans—entered the Jack Daniels Indian Motorcycle Sweepstakes. Davis says she doesn’t know how to ride, but she’s ready to learn.
“I’m so excited,” Davis said. “God blessed me with a beautiful gift for my birthday.”
