JB Charleston General Manager Keola Chan and Loss Prevention Manager Julia Santiago present Teryn Root with her prizes.

When Teryn Root thinks of safety, she wants to BEE in control. The visual merchandiser at the Joint Base Charleston Exchange won the Loss Prevention Directorate’s 2020 Safety Motto Contest.

Root took home the top prize with her motto, “You Will Always ‘BEE’ In Control When Safety Is Your Goal!”

“I know hundreds of associates submit their ideas for the contest every year so it was really exciting to hear that my motto had been chosen for the grand prize,” Root said.

Root won a $100 Exchange gift card, a Loss Prevention challenge coin and a certificate of appreciation from LP’s Health and Safety Office.

“We were impressed with not only the number of submissions but also the creativity the associates expressed in their mottos,” said Loss Prevention Vice President Steve Boyd. “It was difficult to choose a winner, but Teryn’s submission was both creative and successful in expressing excitement about safety.”

Exchange associates submitted 1,100 entries this year. The runners-up and their mottos are:

  • Brandon Marklin, assistant store manager, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, “BEE Safe, BEE Sound… Think Safety all year round!”
  • Darnisha Mosely, executive assistant, HQ Finance & Accounting Directorate, “”It’s 2020 can’t you see, being safe is the way to BEE!”
  • Diamante Byrne, visual merchandiser, Fort Bliss, “Make it your mission to make safe decisions!”
  • Jennifer Cruz, shift manager, Luke AFB, “Prevent Accidents In Every Way, Practice Safety Every Day!”

All runners-up won $50 Exchange gift cards along with safety certificates and Boyd’s challenge coin.
