One in a series honoring the Exchange’s 125 years of family serving family

David Toms’ half a century with the Exchange began when his father put him to work right out of high school in 1967 at the Exchange’s United Kingdom Distribution Center, where he continued to work until it closed 42 years later.

David Toms started his career at the Exchange at the United Kingdom Distribution Center in 1967. He worked there for 42 years until it closed.

“That’s when I was transferred to the Lakenheath Exchange,” said Toms, who works as a stocker at the Express. “I am proud to serve our military. I love meeting our Soldiers and Veterans and hearing their stories.”

Toms’ dedication and passion for serving the military stem from his father, who fought in World Wars I and II, eventually retiring from the Army as a lieutenant colonel. Toms father’s family has proudly served in the military since the American Revolution.

“I am honored to be serving our military and I like to think my father is proud of me as he looks down from the heavens,” he said.

Toms’ serving to the military is an expression of his love for his country.

“I look forward to work every day and hopefully I can continue to work for another decade,” Toms said. “I believe in the Exchange’s core value of family serving family and feel in some sense that I am carrying on my father’s mission of serving and helping the military.”
