Heroes Reap the Savings as Exchange Celebrates Third Anniversary of Veterans Online Shopping Benefit

In November 2017, the Exchange expanded online shopping privileges to all honorably discharged Veterans.

As the Exchange celebrates the third anniversary of the Veterans online shopping benefit, the numbers tell the tale: Veterans have placed more than 750,000 tax-free orders.

“The numbers in the first three years remind us of why we fought for Veterans to be able to shop the Exchange online,” said Exchange Director/CEO Tom Shull, a Vietnam-era Veteran. “These heroes sacrificed for their country, and it is an honor to serve them again.”

Shull was the driving force behind this expansion of the benefit to Veterans. In 2017, after four years of coordination with the Departments of Defense, Army and Air Force, as well as several other federal agencies, military exchanges welcomed home all honorably discharged Veterans with a lifelong online tax-free shopping benefit.

Before the benefit expansion, 92% of America’s Veterans did not have access to the Exchange.

This year also marks the first holiday shopping season since 4.1 million disabled Veterans and certain caregivers became eligible to shop in stores on Jan. 1, 2020.

“No matter how long you served, you are a Veteran for Life,” Shull said. “The Exchange is committed to serving Warfighters and their families throughout their military career, as well as after.”
