125 Years of Family Serving Family – Terrence Carter, Fort Bragg

One in a series of honoring the Exchange’s 125 years of family serving family

When Terrence Carter graduated from high school, he followed in a family tradition: applying to the Exchange.

Carter began as a temporary warehouse worker in 2011 and now serves as a supervisory customer experience associate at Fort Bragg, where his mother, Angela, and sister, Kesha, also work.

“My mother is the reason that I choose to put my best foot forward and strive for success,” Terrence said. “She’s my encourager, my motivator and the example of what hard work and dedication looks like.”

Service runs in the Carter family. Terrence’s dad, Arthur Gillyard, worked as a clerk typist Fort Bragg before serving in the Navy from 1978 to 1987. Today, Terrence has family members serving in all branches of the military.

For him, the best part of working for the Exchange is interacting with people from all walks of life and knowing that he’s making a difference for the military community.

“I like getting to experience the different cultures and ethnicities and better understand their way of living,” he said. “‘Family serving family’ means establishing personal and emotional connections and acknowledging the sacrifices made by our service members who have a story to tell—‘we don’t know them all, but we owe them all.’”
