125 Years of Family Serving Family – Alonzo Oldham, Fort Campbell
One in a series honoring the Exchange’s 125 years of family serving family
When Fort Campbell Exchange custodial worker Alonzo Oldham was hired at the Exchange cafeteria, he could never imagine that he’d still be with the organization 55 years later.
“When I was young and heard of people on the job for 20 years, I wondered how that was possible,” Oldham said.
Oldham, who has two brothers that served in the Army, is grateful to be able to work. When he was young, he contracted measles and was in a coma for six months. As he recovered, he had to relearn how to walk and talk and had issues with speed and agility.
“The Exchange has given me the opportunity to work in spite of these issues,” he said. “Looking back on what I had to overcome, it makes me appreciate being able to work.”
Shoppers at the Fort Campbell PX know Oldham, and he’s often the first person they ask for when they enter the store.
“I think that’s because I treat people how I want them to treat me,” he said. “I try to make them feel at home. The Exchange is one big family.”
