AAPEX Sets 3 Activities for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

AAPIHM-3

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, which commemorates the services and sacrifices of Asians/Pacific Islanders throughout the United States. AAFES Asian/Pacific Exchange (AAPEX), an Exchange Special Emphasis Group, has three activities planned for the month.

The first is a lunch-and-learn that will take place at noon Central Time on May 19. Jesse Martinez, Central Region senior vice president and one of AAPEX’s executive champions, will host “Microaggressions in the Workplace.” Martinez will discuss in detail what microaggresions are, and how biased attitudes such as insensitive remarks and accepting stereotypes can affect the workplace.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, lunch-and-learns have been virtual, via Microsoft Teams – which makes them more inclusive.

The group is also requesting recipes for a 2021 AAPEX cookbook, which will be posted on the Exchange portal. Associates can send recipes and pictures to Antra Pande, AAPEX program manager, at pande@aafes.com or Masuma Tiwana, assistant program manager, at tiwanam@aafes.com, by May 21.

At noon Central on May 26, AAPEX will host a trivia quiz, “AAPI Food Culture,” via Microsoft Teams and Kahoot, a gaming platform. The winner will receive an EEODI backpack and a diversity-related book. To sign up for the quiz, click here.

AAPEX is one of eight Equal Employment Opportunity Diversity and Inclusion Special Emphasis Programs within the Exchange. Its mission is to enhance awareness of Asian Pacific culture, promote professional development and ensure that the Exchange is the employer of choice for Asian- and Pacific Island-Americans. Martinez and Tom Ockenfels, vice president of Administration, are executive champions for the group.
