After weeks of rain, the skies over Fort Leavenworth cleared just in time for a fun-filled family event hosted by the Exchange’s Reel Time Theater, Disney and Fort Leavenworth Morale, Welfare and Recreation.

More than 60 Fort Leavenworth families gathered to watch a free drive-in screening of Disney’s “Moana.” Food trucks sold treats such as shaved ice, kettle corn and cotton candy, and kids received goodie bags with stickers, glow sticks, coloring sheets and crayons, candy and toys.

“Everyone, kids and associates alike, had a great time,” said Fort Leavenworth Exchange Assistant Store Manager Marina Lemanua, who helped coordinate the event. “The Exchange has a strong relationship with MWR and communities across the post that makes working together easy.”

Kids were encouraged to come dressed as their favorite Disney characters and could take pictures in front of a Disney Princess backdrop. Associates also joined the fun by dressing up in “Moana”-themed costumes.

“The event went well and was a great way for families to spend time together and kick off the summer,” said Fort Leavenworth Exchange General Manager George McNamara. “A lot of people worked hard to make this happen, and the Exchange is grateful we could be a part of it.”

Working together, the Fort Leavenworth Exchange, Fort Leavenworth MWR, Fort Leavenworth Commissary and the Exchange Services, Food and Fuel directorate provided a memorable night for the families, especially after more than a year of COVID-19 restrictions limiting events.

“Whenever we can work with stores and our different partners to improve the quality of life for military communities, that’s a win,” said Exchange Motion Picture/Senior Restaurant Program Planner Nalan Howard, who worked with Disney to support the event. “Fun community events like this are a fulfillment of the Exchange’s commitment to service members and families.”
