Sisters Misty and Billie Jo Fleming’s careers with the Exchange started decades ago in Germany, where their Army father was assigned. As the family moved around to duty stations in Germany, the sisters worked in different roles for the Exchange.

When the family moved stateside to Kansas in the mid-1990s, Billie Jo joined the main post Express at Fort Riley before moving to the main store, where she now works as a stockroom laborer. Misty rejoined the Exchange in 2001 and now manages the Normandy Express at Fort Riley.

“It’s nice to be able to call up the street to Misty for any questions I have and vice versa,” Billie Jo said. “We get the best of both worlds.”

Serving the military community runs in the family—in addition to the Flemings’ father’s 29 years in the Army, their mother, Mary, also worked for the Fort Riley Exchange from 2001 to 2004 and again from 2010 to 2012.

“The best thing about working for the Exchange is getting to take care of the Soldiers and their families,” Misty said.

The Fleming sisters’ many years of service have brought the Exchange mission to life for them.

“I was first drawn to the Exchange as military brat but grew to appreciate the core values of the Exchange and the mission we serve,” Billie Jo said. “And I get to be a part of one of those core values—family serving family.”
