Nishan Claussen, a Veteran and buyer for the Exchange in Sembach, Germany, was selected as this year’s Health and Safety Motto Contest winner.

His catchy, winning motto, “2022…Safety begins with you!” leads the charge that associates play a major role in workplace safety.

Nishan Claussen, a Veteran and buyer for the Exchange in Sembach, Germany, was selected as this year’s Health and Safety Motto Contest winner. Inset: Marla Smith Randolph, senior vice president of Europe, Southwest Asia and Africa Region; and Anthony Ventura, regional vice president of Europe Region & Africa, present Claussen with the award.

“I wanted to create a motto that resonated with everyone,” said Claussen. “This motto subtly places accountability on associates and aligns with our core value—use good judgment.”

Claussen received the grand prize—a $100 Exchange gift card along with a challenge coin and certificate of appreciation from the Health and Safety office.

“When I first started at the Exchange about a year ago, I had a very detailed safety briefing. I noticed last year’s motto on banners, emails and other places, “said Claussen. “When I was notified that I won this year’s contest I thought back to my first day—this motto will be everywhere, too.”

More than 800 entries were submitted by associates worldwide.

“It takes all of us to make the workplace safe and it must begin with everyone,” said Vice President of Loss Prevention Steve Boyd. “Each year, the motto contest increases awareness of workplace safety and reduces workplace accidents. Comparing years 2021 to 2020, we’ve saved a little over $3 million by having lower accident rates, per OSHA formulas.”

Four runners-up each won a $50 Exchange gift card, coin and certificate.

1st Runner Up: Angela Salvi, computer operator, Ramstein KMC, “Prevent the Worst, Put Safety First!”

2nd Runner Up: Kim Q. Pepin, Loss Prevention manager, Luke AFB, “Keep Safety in Mind, Help Accidents Decline”

3rd Runner Up: Katrina Jones, contract specialist II, Exchange HQ, “2022 – Safety is What We Do!”

4th Runner Up: Theresa Spraggins, services operations assistant, Patrick AFB, “Stop, Look and Listen, Make Safety Your Mission!”

“We appreciate all associates who entered in this year’s contest, and we encourage everyone to keep the message of health and safety going,” said Boyd.
