Express Seminar Opens With Celebration of Successes, Preview of 2023 Initiatives
More than 200 Exchange associates are gathering at the 2023 Express Seminar in Orlando, Fla., this week, celebrating the successes of 2022 and learning more about in-store products and innovative ways to improve the shopping experience for military shoppers.
The seminar opened with a greeting from Consumables Vice President Martha Robuck. Associates learned about the success of Express stores worldwide, including the achievement of $32.6 million in quick serve program (QSP) sales in 2022—a 42% increase in sales from the previous year.
Actress-singer Jennifer Lopez and actor-producer Mark Wahlberg added to the celebration with a special shoutout video, giving thanks to Express managers for serving those who serve.
Robuck unveiled this year’s goals of $1.5 billion in sales and a gross profit increase to $490 million, detailing the importance of DoorDash delivery from Express locations; driving MILITARY STAR® transactions; and the impact of quick-serve programs, including Hunt Brothers Pizza, Chopz and more, to the bottom line. The Exchange has 124 quick-serve programs, including 25 that opened in 2022. Twelve QSPs have opened in 2023 with 30 additional planned to open throughout the remainder of the year.
“We know not all facilities have room for QSPs, and that’s where Snack Avenue becomes so important,” Robuck said. “Our food team has many new items and is working on others to continue to keep us up to date with strong food offerings.”
During the week, managers will upgrade their “build your basket” skills by learning how to provide additional value to shoppers with cross-merchandising sales strategies.
Attendees will also meet with snack and beverage vendors, hear from Exchange buyers, network with other associates and learn more about new and trending items to be sold in Express stores including cream cheese and bacon stuffed jalapeño Tornados; State Fair corn dogs; Good Humor Reese’s ice cream bars and more.
Outside of the learning space, attendees can snap memorable photos at the photo booth; hear from Chef Robert Irvine and Chief Master Sgt. Kevin Osby, the Exchange’s senior enlisted advisor; and have a laugh at the closing comedy show featuring military-connected comedians Ashley Gutermuth, Robin Phoenix and Doug Bennett.
“You will be going back to your facilities with a wealth of information and exposure to firsthand vendor information and product training,” Robuck said. “Plus, we hope it’s a lot of fun too and you take this time to rekindle friendships and make new ones.”
