Exchange Subways Team to Feed Hundreds of Boy Scouts Evacuated to Camp Humphreys
When Camp Humphreys General Manager Vanessa Rowland received an order for 800 6-inch Subway sandwiches to feed hundreds of U.S. Boy Scouts who were temporarily being housed at the installation, she took immediate action and found a solution within hours.
The Scouts had been attending the 25th World Scout Jamboree near Busan, South Korea, roughly 85 miles from Camp Humphreys, when they were evacuated to the installation because of extreme heat.
The Korea Chapter of the Association of the United States Army sponsored more than 600 Boy Scouts, while they stayed on Camp Humphreys at four school gyms, which were available because of the school’s summer break.
Mia Cho, AUSA representative, called Rowland and placed an order for 800 6-inch sub sandwiches with chips and water by 8:30 a.m. the following morning.
Rowland took on the request by dividing up the enormous order among the four Subway restaurants on base while the Family Mini-Mall Express provided 35 cases of water consisting of 24 bottles apiece.
“Our Subway associates were very excited to support the cause and jumped into action without hesitation,” Rowland said. “It took approximately three hours of teamwork at each facility to cover the order, while still taking care of our regular breakfast customers.”
Since then, other Camp Humphreys restaurants have pitched in. Burger King supplied 150 Whopper combo meals while other Exchange restaurants provided 500 various meals that were delivered to Humphreys Middle School, where some of the Scouts were being housed. The Camp Humphreys team has provided more than 1,450 meals for the Scouts sponsored by AUSA.
Rowland also opened Humphreys Family Theater for an unscheduled recent released movie showing of the movie “Haunted Mansion,” starring LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish and Owen Wilson.
AUSA representatives planned a trip to Everland Theme Park, Korea’s biggest amusement park, to keep the Scouts entertained while they remained on the peninsula, as they waited for a flight back home.
The 25th World Scout Jamboree expected more than 40,000 Scouts age 14 to 17 from 150 countries to attend the 12-day event. This is the second time for Korea to host the event; the first jamboree there was in 1991.
“I am extremely proud of our Humphreys Subway teams and how they came together,” Rowland said. “Instead of one trying and failing, they divided, conquered and worked as a team. It’s very impressive to see what they can accomplish as a team.”
Congratulations on being there for the Boy Scouts of America who were in South Korea. It will be something they will remember probably for the rest of time.
