Exchange Vice President of Contingency Plans Roger Neumann’s involvement and leadership in the National Defense Transportation Association, approaching 30 years, helped him shape his logistics career, provide transportation expertise to the Exchange and earn the NDTA President’s Award.

“While I was a major at Ramstein, there was a short-notice squadron command opportunity that came open at Buckley Air Force Base,” Neumann said. “Because I was active in NDTA in Europe, the USAFE director of transportation who knew me shared that opportunity with three qualified officers including myself. My name was sent to the Air Force Personnel Center and hiring authority at Buckley, and I was ultimately selected for the job.”

While still active-duty, Neumann served as Director of Contingency Plans at Exchange headquarters and was the NDTA’s Dallas-Fort Worth chapter president from 2012-14.

He cites his membership as influential to his role at the Exchange and in the local NDTA chapter.

“In 2012, I was selected for my assignment to Exchange headquarters,” he said. “I had gone through the NDTA’s mentor-protege program and got to know the national staff during my time at the Pentagon, including then-President and CEO Lt. Gen. Kenneth Wykle. When Wykle found out I was coming to Dallas, he told me to go take over the NDTA chapter and do great things.”

Neumann accepted the President’s Award during the organization’s national fall meeting attended by the Exchange’s Logistics team.

The President’s Award honors members who have “demonstrated over time or through a special act, exceptional dedication to furthering the aims and goals of the organization at a level beyond chapter activities,” according to the organization’s award criteria.

Neumann, a lifetime member of the organization, was recognized specifically for his contributions to NDTA and more than a decade of service as chapter, state and regional president in Texas and the southwest US, including maintaining actively engaged chapters throughout the state and writing a white paper to drive corporate-level interest to local chapters nationwide.

According to the Defense Transportation Journal, “Neumann’s white paper provided timely and valuable insights and recommendations and shaped the NDTA Headquarters approach to collective interactions with NDTA Corporate Members at the chapter level.”

“I appreciate President and CEO Admiral Brown for his nomination,” Neumann said. “I also appreciate Chairman John Dietrich’s approval to recognize my decade of service, leadership roles and advocacy for NDTA chapters worldwide—not just in Dallas.”

This is Neumann’s fourth NDTA award. In 2014, he was awarded the President’s Special Achievement Award and received two Distinguished Service awards for the 2012-13 and 2014-15 selection years.

The NDTA is a nonpolitical, nonprofit educational organization in logistics, transportation and passenger travel services. Since World War II, NDTA has served U.S. national defense and homeland security as a trusted environment where government, military and private sector experts can build working relationships, develop the next generation of professionals and solve pressing challenges.
