Exchange Upgrades PX at Camp Bonifas in Korean Demilitarized Zone

The Korean Demilitarized Zone is a 2.5-mile-wide “buffer zone” between North Korea and South Korea. Camp Bonifas sits less than a quarter-mile from the DMZ, and troops there now have a bigger and better selection for a taste of home—thanks to the Exchange’s presence there.

The Exchange renovated the very small PX to nearly double its size, allowing for shelves stocked with more American snacks and beverages, as well as non-food items.

Among the additions are a sports nutrition section; electronic items such as headphones, speakers, adapters and chargers; towels and linens; a wider assortment of detergents; tumblers; expanded personal hygiene options, including hair and skin care products; and a small selection of tactical items.

“The Soldiers really like the new space,” said Kisol Han, Exchange Korea Northern general manager. “It’s still a very small store, but they greatly appreciate the expansion, as it shows the Exchange’s commitment to Soldiers assigned to isolated locations.”

U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan-Casey Commander Col. Edward Cho and Exchange Regional Vice President Jennifer Jordan were on hand to help cut the ribbon.

“Facilities such as this are a tangible manifestation of the Army’s efforts to improve your lives and recognize your sacrifices,” Cho said at the grand opening. “Post Exchanges serve as a cornerstone of military life where service members come together to connect, unwind and enjoy a taste of home.”

Camp Bonifas is home to the United Nations Command Security Battalion-Joint Security Area (JSA), whose primary mission is to monitor and enforce the Korean Armistice Agreement of 1953 between North and South Korea. Currently, 76 Soldiers, including U.S. Army and U.N. Soldiers, are assigned to Camp Bonifas. Additionally, the JSA tour bus periodically stops at Camp Bonifas, allowing any authorized shoppers from other U.S. military installations in Korea to shop at the PX.

“The Camp Bonifas PX really exemplifies the Exchange mission of ‘We Go Where You Go,’” Jordan said. “We are honored to provide essential services to our valued Soldiers wherever they are stationed.”
