Mental Health: Social Media Addiction
While not officially recognized as a diagnosis, social media addiction is a real issue many people face. Recognizing, understanding and overcoming this habit is essential.
- Signs of dependency: If you feel anxious without your phone, are constantly checking it, or are disappointed by a lack of engagement on your posts, you might be dependent.
- Designed to hook you: Social media platforms are built to keep you scrolling. Unexpected content can trigger the release of dopamine, motivating repeated phone checks.
- Reducing use: Be mindful of when you reach for your phone automatically. Replace this behavior with offline activities, disable notifications and take regular screen-free breaks.
Excessive social media use can negatively affect mental health, leading to addictive behaviors and distorted perceptions of reality.
- Negative effects: Overuse can cause isolation, loneliness, impulsivity, anxiety, depression and reduced attention span. It can also fuel low self-esteem and a fear of missing out, disrupt sleep and decrease physical activity.
- Global impact: Research from the University of Michigan indicates about 210 million people worldwide are addicted to social media and the internet. Teens average 7 hours and 22 minutes of screen time daily.
To mitigate these effects, set limits on phone use and devote more time to self-care.
