USAG Humphreys Exchange Summer Hire Program Celebrates Student Workers at Award Ceremony
For nine weeks this summer, shoppers at the U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys Exchange were helped by teens wearing purple vests, the Department of Defense’s official color for military children. The student workers, who were part of a summer employment program, were honored Aug. 12 at an award ceremony for their dedication.
Fourteen students, who first learned of the program from in-store flyers and on the store’s Facebook page, received a certificate of completion and a Thanks award based on their performance. Two teams of student workers were also rewarded as the top MILITARY STAR® performers for securing the most cardholder acquisitions.
Courage Mbnoifon, 18, participated in this year’s program and developed new skills and work experience.
“I gained valuable experience that will benefit me in the future,” said Mbonifon, whose father, Sgt. Fon Walters, is assigned to USAG Humphreys. “I learned the importance of maintaining professionalism and gained a deeper appreciation for the work we do that ensures the store operates efficiently.”
Since 2019, students between 14 and 18 have been given an opportunity to gain retail experience and a paycheck at the Humphreys Exchange during summer breaks.
“The program helps us connect with our youngest partners and gives kids something to do on base for the summer,” said Store Manager Tonya Jones. “Students also leave with a well-rounded view of how the Exchange works.”
Management considers students’ ages when assigning tasks. Students work throughout the store as floating associates, helping in softlines, hardlines and the stockroom as well as in the food court and at the Express. They also assist at MILITARY STAR card tabling events.
“This year we added in some field trips for the student workers where they had a chance to tour the bakery and learn more about the Exchange and future career opportunities,” said General Manager George McNamara. “This opportunity could be the seed that grows them into future leaders here at the Exchange.”
In addition to completing their work tasks, students learned about the Exchange’s operations, including logistics, services, contracting, finance, human resources and facility management, and toured the distribution center. Eligible student workers can be rehired next summer.
