The AAFES Retired Employees Association (AREA) is poised to strengthen its mission of supporting the interests of the Exchange, its retirees and the communities they serve. Established in 1975, AREA remains dedicated to fostering friendships, encouraging volunteerism and providing critical support through scholarships and emergency relief funds.

With local chapters across the United States, AREA has successfully maintained its original goals while expanding its scope to meet the evolving needs of its members. Our mission has always been about connection and support. We’re proud to continue that legacy and enhance our impact on both our members and their communities.

The association’s objectives at the National level are threefold: to promote communication and social activities among retired Exchange associates, to advocate for the interests of the Exchange and its workforce and to support members in their post-retirement lives. Monthly newsletters and local chapter activities help sustain the bonds formed during members’ careers, while also keeping them informed about benefits and resources available to them.

One of National AREA’s most significant initiatives is its scholarship program, which has provided $987,795 to 419 students since its inception in 1985. In 2024 alone, AREA awarded 12 scholarships totaling $40,000 to children of Exchange employees, underscoring its commitment to educational support.

In addition to scholarships, National AREA has an emergency relief program that offers financial assistance to Exchange associates and their families affected by disasters. Initiated when the Exchange was unable to provide direct assistance, this program has raised substantial funds for disaster victims. Past efforts include funds raised for the Pentagon Victims Fund after 9/11, associates at Keesler Air Force Base affected by severe weather, and for Guam/Saipan after Typhoon Mawar.  Most recently, the emergency relief fund was implemented to assist Exchange associates impacted by hurricanes Helene and Milton. The generosity of our members is truly inspiring.  The willingness to support each other in times of need demonstrates the strength of our community.

With a growing membership base that includes not only retirees but also active Exchange associates, AREA has established a welcoming environment for anyone connected to the AAFES community. Eligible members include retired civilian personnel, current associates, foreign nationals and third-country nationals who worked for the Exchange, military personnel who were assigned to duty with the Exchange and surviving spouses, all of whom can join the national organization online.

Local chapters host a variety of social and charitable events, from lunches and dinners to picnics and trips, fostering an atmosphere of friendship and camaraderie. These gatherings are not just about maintaining old friendships but also about building new connections and enriching our lives post-retirement.

As AREA looks to the future, it remains focused on protecting retiree benefits and advocating for its members. With a commitment to continued engagement and support, the association is poised to enhance the lives of retirees and their families for years to come.
