Tinker AFB, Fort Sill Military Shoppers Surprised with Paid-Off Layaways

Thirty-five Tinker Air Force Base and Fort Sill shoppers got a special holiday surprise this year—their layaway balances were paid in full.

On Dec. 13, 20 Tinker Exchange shoppers received the news at the BX food court. The layaways, representing all layaway balances at the Tinker Exchange and totaling nearly $3,600, were paid for by nonprofit Soldier’s Wish.

The shoppers were invited to the food court under the premise they had won a mystery sweepstakes. When they arrived, they were greeted by the Tinker Exchange team; 72nd Air Base Wing Deputy Commander Air Force Col. Hardy Giles; Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron (VQ) 3 Commanding Officer Navy Cmdr. Conor Heely; Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron (VQ) 3 Executive Officer Navy Cmdr. Matthew Lovick; and Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron (VQ) 3 Navy Master Chief Kevin Lohrke.

“When I made the welcome, I gave them the real reason that they were there,” said Tinker Exchange General Manager Charles Eaves. “The shock and joy in their eyes were priceless.”

Next, on Dec. 15, 15 Fort Sill Exchange shoppers were surprised with the same news in the main PX. Their layaways totaled about $2,800.

“This is the best part of serving those who serve,” said Fort Sill Exchange General Manager Mikel Hunter. “Everyone on the team was so excited to bring smiles to these shoppers’ faces, and finally seeing the joy in their faces on the big day was just priceless.”

Soldier’s Wish is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization providing direct service and support for Veterans, service members and their families.

“We are so grateful to have been able to help make this event special for these military families,” Eaves said. “When you are able to participate in events such as this at this time of year, it truly gives you a better understanding of the meaning of Christmas.”
