AREA to Award $40,000 in College Scholarships

AREA Scholarships Deadline 2023

For the 38th consecutive year, the AAFES Retired Employees Association (AREA) is offering scholarships to children of Exchange associates and of military personnel assigned to the Exchange.

AREA plans to award $40,000 in scholarships: Two for $5,000 and 10 for $3,000. AREA may award additional scholarships depending on the number and quality of applications received.

Since the scholarship program began in 1985, AREA has awarded almost $908,000 to nearly 400 students.

Graduating high school seniors who have been accepted to an accredited college or university are eligible. The application deadline is March 31.

Scholarships are awarded based on the applicant’s scholastic honors and other recognition, school and outside activities, hobbies and special talents, letters of recommendation and an essay.

Applicants must be natural, legally adopted children or custodial stepchildren of active, retired or deceased Exchange U.S. payroll employees or military personnel assigned to the Exchange. If retired, the sponsor must be an active AREA member.

For full criteria or an application form, visit the program’s website. If you have questions, contact Scholarships@aafesretired.com.

I’d like to say “thank you” for the AAFES scholarship program. I think it would be interesting to have past recipients send a short update on their college experience and current career path. My wife and I have 3 daughters who received scholarships in 2011, 2013 and 2018. Each went on to graduate from Ga Tech, Valdosta State and the University of North Georgia. Victoria (2011) is now an executive for Disney in Orlando, Gabrielle is the lead training Design/Instructor for Chicken Salad Chic and Audrey (2018) is the manager of creative design for the St Louis Cardinals minor league team in Peoria. I would enjoy reading on how other recipients have benefited from the AAFES scholarship program! Again, “thank You”!
