Preventing Suicide: Caring for Your Mental Health
As we observe Suicide Prevention Month in September, the subject of suicide can often feel taboo—something people are hesitant to discuss. The silence must be broken, however, because open conversations about mental health and suicide prevention can save lives.
Life’s challenges can sometimes lead to feelings of despair and hopelessness. Situations like a breakup, job loss, social exclusion, bullying or other trauma can create a sense of isolation, but it’s important to remember that these feelings, although painful, are not permanent.
Here are some things you can do if you or someone you know might be struggling with thoughts of suicide:
- Spot the triggers: Be aware of signs that may indicate worsening distress, such as self-blame, poor self-esteem, rejection, loss of interest in activities or feeling trapped and hopeless.
- Remove lethal items: Make the environment safer by removing items that could be used for self-harm, such as guns, knives, razors or expired and non-essential medications.
- Get help right away: Acting quickly can make all the difference. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, reach out immediately. Call or text 988 to connect with the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, where trained counselors can help you talk through your feelings and develop a safety plan.
- Consult with a professional: Mental health professionals can provide support and guidance if you’re dealing with depression, anxiety or suicidal thoughts.
- Reach out: Don’t hesitate to talk to a close friend, loved one or spiritual advisor if you’re in crisis. If the situation feels urgent, dial 911 for immediate assistance.
- Recognize feelings are temporary: Remember, these dark feelings aren’t permanent. With the proper care and support, you can and will feel better.
Please know that you are not alone. Help is available, and there are people who care deeply about your well-being. Together, we can create a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and safe.
